NULGE: Rallying For Local Government Autonomy

In January 2013, Mark Amaza wrote an article titled: _Do We Need Local Government Autonomy_, his essay asserted that though local government is considered the third tier of government, the 1999 Constitution did not explicitly say so and that is why it has been treated as no more than a ministry of state government.


NULGE Takes Protests to Calabar, Lagos

As the National Assembly commences another round of constitutional amendment, the National Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) has kick-started its nationwide protests to draw supports for local government autonomy. The union has scheduled national rally, one in each of the six geo-political zones across the country and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.


Fayose Backs LG Autonomy, Pardons Dismissed NULGE Leader

The Governor of Ekiti State, Mr. Ayodele Fayose, on Monday, declared support for total autonomy of the local government.

He urged his colleague governors to follow suit to bring development to the grassroots. Fayose also pardoned a local government staff and Deputy President of the Nigerian Union of Local Government Employees in Ekiti State, Com. O.B. Olatunde, who was dismissed from service for alleged rudeness to the governor over salary crisis.‎

Rivers State Assembly Speaker Resigns

The Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Daborotudima Adams on Friday resigned his appointment shortly after administering oath of office on 12 newly elected members.

Information on what led to the sudden resignation of the ex-speaker was still sketchy as at the time of filing this report.

Meanwhile, the member representing Andoni Constituency, Ikunyi Ibani, of the Peoples Democratic Party has been re-elected speaker of the House.

The Deputy speaker of the House, Marshal Uwom presided over the election of the new speaker.

Son Of Ex-Katsina District Head Sentenced To Death By Hanging

A Katsina State High Court sitting in Funtua on Thursday sentenced Mu’ammar Tukur, son of former District Head of Bakori, to death by hanging for culpable homicide.

Mr. Tukur, 32, whose late father represented Bakori/Danja Federal Constituency at Federal House of Representatives, was convicted for stabbing Shafir Muktar to death.

In his judgment, Justice Abbas Bawale said the prosecution led by Aminu Garba had established the case of culpable homicide against the convict beyond reasonable doubt.

Gunmen Attack Convoy Of Taraba APC Chieftain, Kill One

The Taraba State Police Command have confirmed the death of one person in an attack on the convoy of Alhaji Adamu Mohammed, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ibi Local Government Area of the state.

The command’s Public Relations Officer, David Misal said in an interview with newsmen in Jalingo on Thursday that the incident occurred at about 6 p.m. on Wednesday at Mala village.

He added that three persons, critically injured in the attack, were on admission at the Federal Medical Centre, Jalingo.

Anambra State counterpart, Mrs Ebelechukwu Obiano and six others have been shortlisted for the Most Valuable Governor’s Wife Awards, 2017.

The organisers, Mr. Tom Obulu and Dr. Bilikisu Magoro, at a news conference in Abuja, said: “The 36 governors’ wives
and wife of the FCT minister are assessed based on their project availability in the
public domain and their impact on their beneficiaries.’’

Gov. Kashim Shettima of Borno, on Tuesday called for detailed investigation on what happened to the N500 million said to have been released for the reconstruction of Government Girls Secondary School, Chibok.

The administration of former president Goodluck Jonathan announced the release of the money after the abduction of Chibok school girls.
