Gambia: Jammeh Will Not Step Down – Information Minister Insists

Gambia’s Minister of Information, Sidie Njie, has insisted that Yahya Jammeh will not step down as President.

Njie is the only Minister still in support of Jammeh, after six of his colleagues resigned two days earlier.

He has now told the BBC that his principal was still in control of the West African nation, despite Adama Barrow being sworn-in on Thursday.

Senegal: Troops Enter Gambia In Effort To Get Jammeh To Go

Dakar - Senegalese troops charged into neighboring Gambia late on Thursday in a show of force to oust longtime ruler Yahya Jammeh after he failed to step aside when his mandate ended at midnight after losing the presidential election last month.

The troops moved in shortly after Adama Barrow was inaugurated as Gambia's first new leader in more than 22 years at the country's embassy in neighbouring Senegal after a final effort at diplomatic talks with Jammeh failed to secure his departure.

West African leaders have given Yahya Jammeh, who ,lost elections last month, until midday on Friday to hand over power and agree to leave The Gambia or face military action carried out by the regional bloc ECOWAS.

West African troops entered the country to bolster its new President Adama Barrow - who was sworn-in on Thursday - but military operations were suspended a few hours later in favour of a final diplomatic push to convince Jammeh, who has stubbornly refused to quit, to exit peacefully.
